Our Story

Central Coast Braver Angels (CCBA) is a proud local branch of Braver Angels.org (previously “Better Angels.org”) the national organization.  We encourage you to check them out, support them, and participate in their efforts.

In mid-2019, the founders of CCBA fell in love with the Braver Angels goal of vigorous, lively, and topical political discussion aimed at mutual understanding and respect—NOT at winning.  The two original founders, Gordon Mullin (from SLO) and Fil Yeskel (from Atascadero), both of whom tend to lean toward the Red side on most questions, were soon joined by Susan Robinson (Paso Robles), an organizer coming from the Blue side.  In the wonderful spirit of Braver Angels, we have gone from demonized opponents to mutual collaborators on this project, to friends - who still disagree on many issues.

CCBA differs not in kind from the national Braver Angels, but in scope.  We strive to bring national and even global issues down to our local level.  Thus, when you attend one of our events you’ll find yourself in a room (physical or virtual) populated mostly with friends and neighbors.  This not only allows us to talk less abstractly and more concretely about the effects of national policies in our own communities (e.g., police “defunding”)  but also to address local issues that might otherwise be swamped on the national stage (e.g., the imminent closing of Diablo Canyon as an instance of the controversies over nuclear power).
